Explore your love of colour in our enamelling class with expert jeweller and tutor Sara Barker.
This session will focus on making a small kiln fired enamel copper bowl.
Please note this class is ideal if you have some enamelling experience as we will be exploring the challenges of enamelling onto the curved sides of the bowl’s form. Manual dexterity is important for this class as is a willingness to work methodically. However, complete beginners can be supported as we troubleshoot the challenges of applying the enamels to this more challenging shape and scale.
The larger surface area of the dish is perfect for wider experiments with enamel colours and after some initial experiments on a flat copper test tile, there will be time to design the surface pattern of your bowl before applying and firing the colours. Students will be encouraged to develop their own decorative styles and techniques to produce a highly personal and individual outcome.
One of the exciting things about enamelling is that once you apply glass and heat together in a kiln, you are never entirely sure of the outcome, so students need to be adaptable to change their designs, as necessary. Sara will discuss the considerations you need to make when firing your pieces and how to reduce the risks of certain problems such as fire scale build up, and overfiring of your work.
