Explore and develop your love of precious and semi-precious gemstones, in our introduction to stone setting class with expert jeweller Marlies White. You will be introduced to the simple yet effective techniques of tube and collet setting a faceted stone and making a stone-set ring in your own size.
In this full-day workshop you will be learning how to make a setting for a round brilliant cut stone from silver tube as a tube set ring or using the collet blocks to create a graduated setting using tube. Â You will then be shown how to create the seat for the stone to sit on and how to solder this onto the ring shank.
Once you have made the setting and the ring is assembled, you will be shown how to set the stone securely with traditional hand tools and techniques.
Please note : Masterclasses are designed for students who have completed our beginners course as it relies on the foundation skills of soldering and forming already being in place.
You do not need any prior setting experience however the fundamental skills of soldering, piercing and forming would be a requirement.
This class is therefore only suitable for those with jewellery making experience as it requires competent use of a gas torch, jewellery saw, a steady hand and good eyesight. (Basic skills will not be covered in this class.)
All tools, materials and tuition will be provided. Materials are included to make one ring each, more can be purchased on the day if required.
Tea and coffee making facilities are  available throughout the session, please provide your own lunch.
