Introduction to cuttlefish / water casting
Overview
This full one day workshop will be taking you through the stages of cuttlefish casting to show you how you can use this inexpensive organic material to make unique jewellery pieces. Â We will also be learning about casting into other media such as water, spaghetti, lentils and others, to get unique and interesting one-off pieces and components to use going forwards to make exciting jewellery.
This casting process is ideal for the hobbyist jeweller as you don’t need many expensive tools to achieve great results.
We will be showing you how to make your moulds by carving into cuttlefish and also how to use found objects to make a copy in metal.  You are welcome to bring your own small items (not all will be suitable for moulding as undercuts may prevent a good cast) or you’re welcome to use any from my selection to try.
Please note we will not be focusing on making finished items of jewellery to take home but you will have a selection of silver items to incorporate into your designs. You will be learning the techniques of casting, mould making and understanding how the process works and how to make it your own!
This workshop is best suited to those with prior jewellery making experience who wish to further extend their skill set. Competent use of a gas torch and saw frame will be expected.
You must provide your own clean silver scrap / casting grain to use on the day.
At least 30g+ will be needed but the amount largely depends on your own designs so please ensure you bring enough to work with on the day. It’s best to have more than you need so that you don’t run out on the day.
Silver grain will NOT be available to purchase from the workshop so please provide your own, you can message me beforehand to purchase grain on your behalf if you’d prefer.
Only 8 spaces available on this full day session, 10am until 4pm. Â Saturday 5th April 2025
