Explore and develop your love of sparkly gemstones, in our introduction to flush setting in this full one day class with local goldsmith Marlies White.

Marlies will teach you techniques needed to set small faceted stones (Brilliant cuts) into the metal so that they are flush with the surface of your jewellery.  We will spend the morning practicing drilling and tapering a setting and learning the skills for good use of the flex shaft and practicing setting the stones in copper.  After lunch we will be flush setting stones in silver to further extend your skill set.

If you have your own flex shaft and would like to bring it to learn on your own motor, please do.

Previous experience of working in silver and using a flex shaft or micro motor is preferable but not essential. Please note that a good level of dexterity and good eyesight is required, as you will be measuring for precision and accuracy in your work.

Please note: Masterclasses are designed for students who have at least completed our beginners course as it relies on the foundation skills already being in place.

This workshop is not really suitable for absolute beginners.

What you'll learn

  • Correct use of a pendant motor to accurately drill and burr holes for flush setting.
  • Practicing in copper for setting flush stones.
  • Learning how to drill perfect shaped holes in metal to correct shape and depth.
  • When you have perfected the technique, you then set a stone in a silver pendant to keep with your practice plate.
  • How to set the metal in thermoloc to hold the piece whilst working.
  • How to polish the piece to get a professional finish.
  • Troubleshooting issues along the way.
  • Examples of how to use flush setting in jewellery and hands-on support throughout the day.
